Даже один из новейших словарей — словарь Мюллера — не дает всех необходимых значений слова labor в его употреблении в США, приводя лишь следующие значения: 1) труд; работа; усилие; 2) рабочий класс; труд (в противоположность капиталу)... 5) атрибутивное лейбористский.

В атрибутивном употреблении это олово может обозначать и профсоюзный. В словаре Мюллера изд. 1977 г. labour leader — руководитель тред-юниона.

Women are still blocked as professional engineers

Britain has a smaller proportion of women in engineering profession than in any other developed country, says the Equal Opportunities Commission. Only 0.2 per cent of qualified engineers in Great Britain are women compared with 3 per cent in prance, 10 per cent in Scandinavia and 30 per cent in the Soviet Union. The Commission suggests that serious attention should be given to introducing "O" and "A" level¹ engineering into school syllabuses.

This is one of the proposals aiming at helping parents, schools, employers and girls themselves to realize that engineering is a suitable profession for women They say that traditional attitudes — among both men and women — still work stronglj against change in this field. But there are also solid realities which are stumbling blocks.

Girls are channeled into arts subjects at schools, with the result that few women have the necessary qualifications for science and engineering courses in higher education. And the structure of entry to the profession is even more rigid now than it was in the past. For example, the route to part-time study has been made much more difficult in recent years, with a number of qualifications no longer accepted for admission to professional institutions.

The Commission is also concerned that promotions to top management positions very rarely come the way of those women who are working in research and development.

§15. Зависимость перевода слова от контекста. Разновидности контекста.

Из анализа примеров перевода многозначных слов можно видеть, что и эквивалентные соответствия имеют лишь относительную независимость и что они тоже подчиняются влиянию контекста. Правда, слова, имеющие единственное соответствие в другом языке, т. е. эквиваленты, часто служат своего рода катализатором понимания, ускоряя восприятие смысла всей фразы в целом. Таким образом эти слова сами воздействуют на контекст больше, чем контекст влияет на них.
